Safety on the job with an aging workforce

Safety on the job can be affected by many factors, and Pennsylvania employers may be surprised to learn that statistics reflect better safety levels among workers who are at or over the age of 55. There are several possible reasons, including the fact that this age group tends to be more emotionally stable. The accumulated wisdom and insight that accompanies many years of work can also play a role in safer work habits. In many cases, experienced individuals have the ability to recognize unsafe actions or patterns, heading them off by recommending changes.

Workplace safety considerations for the winter months

The winter months are a time of excitement and family gatherings for many Pennsylvania residents, but those who work outside in freezing temperatures or struggle to cope with holiday crowds may see things differently. The plunging temperatures of winter pose a serious threat of frostbite or hypothermia for workers exposed to the elements, and employers should ensure that they are properly protected from the cold before allowing them to venture outside. Outside workers should also be reminded that eating and drinking regularly can prevent dehydration and provide them with the energy necessary to help them cope with icy conditions.

Workplace injuries from electrical shock

Workers in Pennsylvania who perform jobs around sources of electricity should be mindful of the dangers of electrical shock. In 2014, 156 workers in the United States were killed after they were exposed to unsafe levels of electricity. Electrical shocks from low-voltage sources are usually not serious, but prolonged shocks from high-voltage sources can cause death.
